Removable Retainers
Removable Retainers
Removable retainers, as the name suggests, are appliances designed to maintain the position of your teeth after orthodontic treatment with braces or clear aligners. They are typically worn for a certain period after your teeth have reached their final desired alignment to prevent them from shifting back to their original positions.
Types of Removable Retainers
There are two main types of removable retainers:
- Hawley Retainers: These retainers consist of a clear or plastic base that fits over the roof of your mouth (upper retainer) or along the inside of your lower teeth (lower retainer). A thin metal wire runs along the front of your teeth to provide stability and maintain their alignment. Hawley retainers are relatively durable and can be adjusted if needed.
- Clear Plastic Retainers (Essix Retainers): These retainers are virtually invisible, molded directly to fit snugly over your teeth. They are typically made from a thin, flexible plastic material and may need to be replaced more frequently than Hawley retainers.
Benefits of Removable Retainers
- Prevent Teeth Shifting: Removable retainers are essential for preventing your teeth from shifting back to their original positions after orthodontic treatment.
- Comfortable: Both Hawley and clear plastic retainers are comfortable to wear.
- Removable for Cleaning: Removable retainers can be easily taken out for cleaning, allowing you to maintain good oral hygiene.
How Long Do You Need to Wear Removable Retainers?
The recommended duration for wearing removable retainers can vary depending on your individual case and your orthodontist's instructions. In some cases, you may initially need to wear your retainers full-time for several months, followed by nightly wear for an extended period, possibly even lifelong in some situations.
Caring for Removable Retainers
- Clean Regularly: Clean your retainers daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and toothpaste or a denture cleanser.
- Handle with Care: Removable retainers are delicate, so handle them with care to avoid breaking or warping them.
- Store Properly: When not in use, store your retainers in their designated case to keep them safe from damage and prevent them from getting lost.
What Happens if I Don't Wear My Retainer?
If you don't wear your retainer as instructed, your teeth can begin to shift back out of position. This can undo all the progress you made with your orthodontic treatment and may necessitate additional treatment to correct the relapse.
